(180): So Much Money...

I think I hinted at this in the "Orientation" entry, but the train system along the Azure Coast is great. You can pay just a few euros to hop on a train (or not... odds are no one will check your ticket) to any one of several gorgeous spots along the coast. Trains are liberally air-conditioned*, and it's a perfect addendum to Antibes/Juan-les-Pins which, while nice, get a tad small after a while. This is why it's better to study here than in Aix, I figure.

So, Andrew Bost (fellow CEA kid) and I hopped on a train and when we got there, we just started walking around and taking a bunch of pictures. You can see mine here.

Monaco's cool - I'm definitely glad I went - but it's not my favorite. (Very) Generally speaking, I have simple tastes in most things and I hate the taste of casinos, so the outrageous displays of wealth were more or less lost on me (much to other-Andrew's chagrin). While I appreciate the craftsmanship and effort and talent required to produce anything as well-made as a Ferrari, I personally don't see a reason to spend so much money on a car, which strikes me as something that needs to work, work well, and work well for as long a time as possible. As long as it fits those criteria, the car could be a rickety old Honda for all I care. I feel like once I'm at the point where I can afford to spend that much money on a needlessly fancy version of something so purely functional, I need to find a better use for my money.

If, on the other hand, my wife wants such a car, that's a different story.

* This is a good thing, from my point of view. Not only is it hot, but if the air conditioner and I had started out by disagreeing over health care reform, the hour ride to Monaco would have been a little awkward.
